Black Elder
Black Elder is a herb that has been used for centuries to fight the symptoms of colds and flu. Modern research indicates that it may well have some of the answers to the modern viral disease that seem to be getting ever more dangerous.

Black Elder as an anti-viral agent - For centuries Black Elder has been used to fight the symptoms of colds and flu. Conrad von Magenberg was the first to write about Elder's ability to enhance resistance to disease in the thirteen hundreds!
Research shows that people (and animals) with colds and flu given Black Elder recover faster and suffer fewer symptoms. It has to be said though, Black Elder does not seem to prevent colds and flu, it just 'deals with them' effectively! Clinical trials have shown that Black Elder helps to limit the course of, and reduce the symptoms caused by several strains of Influenza A and B viruses. Black Elder may also have some activity against HIV and the cold-sore virus, not to mention the notorious bird-flu!
Black elder extract stops viruses replicating both in the test-tube and in people. The influenza virus attaches itself to our cells by little 'spikes' on the viral membrane called haemagglutinins. Once attached the virus uses an enzyme called neuraminidase to enter our cells. Once in, the virus can multiply. Israeli researcher, Madeleine Mumcuoglu, Ph.D. of the Hadassah-Hebrew university Medical Centre in Ein Karem, Israel, has researched the activity of Black Elder extensively. She found principles in Black Elder that inhibit the neuraminidase effect on our cells within 24-48 hours, and thus block the entry of the virus into our bodies.
What's more, Black Elder triggers an immune response to invasion of our bodies by a virus. As well as raising an anti-body response various chemicals called cytokines are raised. These chemicals amplify an immune response to virus infected cells. Black Elder is also used to reduce the fever caused by colds and flu. In this respect Black Elder is probably the best known and longest used fever reducing herb on Earth!
Black Elder as an anti-oxidant - The anthocyanins and flavonoids in Black Elder are powerful anti-oxidants helping to reduce free-radical damage, stabilise cell membranes and strengthen collagen.
Black Elder as a cleanser and detox agent - Black Elder has a mild diuretic effect and gently stimulates the bowel. It also opens up the skin and allows you to sweat, hence its use in 'sweating out a fever'.
Interestingly, it appears to have a protective and anti-inflammatory effect on the bowel lining and has been used to treat gut infections.
These effects may well make Black Elder the safest and most effective detox herb available
