Prostate problems can cause misery for women, too!
Thousands of women suffer because of a health problem that exclusively affects men, claims GP Dr Rob Hicks. Enlarged prostate can cause widespread disruption not just for men but to the lives of their partners.

“I am not just talking about the stress of knowing the person closest to you has a worrying condition,” he says, “though that is bad enough. There are women whose own health suffers because they never get a decent night’s sleep, since the problem causes bladder flow obstruction and their partner is up and down all night going to the loo. Their social life can be affected, too. Long car journeys can be a no-go for prostate victims because of the frequent need to find somewhere to stop and relieve themselves. Socialising can be embarrassing too”.

Dr Hicks advises women. “Don’t suffer in silence. Nag your man until he goes to the doctor and gets advice and treatment, which can be a simple matter of taking medicine.”

The fear factor
Many men with “dodgy waterworks” refuse to seek help.

Research by the Men’s Health Forum shows that:
43 per cent of men aged over 50 are too afraid to go to their doctor with a bladder problem
74 per cent are too embarrassed to tell their doctor about it
58 per cent have either not visited their GP at all in the previous 12 months or have done so only once or twice
19 per cent get up more than twice to pass water during the night
42 per cent don’t know where their prostate is.

A retailer recently let us know about a customer who came to her store recently to buy an extract of Saw Palmetto. He was in early 50s and looking miserable. Two weeks later he returned to say that his quality of life was greatly improved.

Announcements this week that discoveries have been made about the genetics of prostate cancer are encouraging on several levels. The If the condition is discovered early enough, recovery rates are very high and treatment is less unpleasant (no chemo or radiotherapy required). So when we get men in stores/pharmacies asking about urinary symptoms, it's essential to encourage them to check with their doctor. If they receive a confirmed diagnosis of BPH, then the traditional remedy Prostasan Saw Palmetto capsules can help with their symptoms. If it's something else, swift detection by a doctor will improve the chances of recovery.
